Going on Vacation? Identity Theft Can Happen Anywhere, Anytime
In a recent study, 13% of the respondents said they had experienced identity fraud or theft in 2015 while they traveled. Additionally, research from one analytic software firm reported the highest historical number of ATM's compromised by criminals during that year. Occurrences reportedly rose 546% in 2015, with non-bank ATM's accounting for 60% of the compromises.
During travel, the risk of fraud and identity theft can increase, providing thieves with prime opportunities. Criminals target documents such as driver's licenses, passports and personal information, in addition to debit and credit cards.
Before beginning a trip:
- Go through your wallet and remove any unneeded documents and cards, including your social security card.
- Pack credit cards or travelers checks, but leave your checkbook at home.
- Make a photocopy of the documents and cards you will take and store the copies with someone you trust at home.
- Notify your financial institution of your upcoming travel plans for enhanced fraud protection and to avoid inadvertently triggering a frozen account.
- Protect your mobile devices with security programs such as anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware, and beware of unsecured and unencrypted public WIFI connections. Never use a public computer to access sensitive information.
- Don't leave personal documents unsecured in hotel rooms, utilize the hotel safe.
- Don't throw away receipts or documents in trash cans, ask the hotel to shred them.
- Avoid using ATM's, but if you must, don't use a debit card for access. Ask your bank to provide an "ATM only" card.
Additionally, remember you can be targeted at home while you travel. Have someone collect your mail while you're gone and don't post your vacation plans on social media such as facebook. Wait until you return to share your vacation experience.
Beware of free vacation offers and always do your research before providing any information. When you return from your trip, check your receipts against your statements to ensure all charges are accurate and no fraudulent activity has occurred. As usual, monitor your credit reports and scores and report any suspicious activity. Taking these precautions can help deter thieves and provide you with a safe and relaxing vacation.
