Pollution & Environmental Liability Insurance

Pollution and environmental liability insurance covers the cleanup costs, bodily injury, property damage, and legal expenses that result from a pollution condition — exposures that standard general liability and property policies specifically exclude. As environmental regulation tightens and cleanup costs climb, this coverage has become essential for contractors, property owners, and any business that handles, stores, transports, or could disturb hazardous materials.

Environmental coverage is generally written in two forms, which can be combined:

  • Contractors Pollution Liability (CPL) — protects contractors against pollution claims arising from their operations and completed work, including spills, releases, and disturbance of existing contamination
  • Site Pollution / Pollution Legal Liability (PLL) — protects owners and operators of a property or facility against pollution conditions originating on or migrating from the insured site

Coverage commonly responds to:

  • Cleanup and remediation costs — on-site and off-site, including emergency response
  • Third-party bodily injury and property damage from a covered pollution condition
  • Legal defense costs and regulatory proceedings
  • Transportation and disposal of materials and waste
  • Both sudden and gradual pollution events, and conditions such as mold or legionella (by form)

Because the standard pollution exclusion leaves a significant gap in most commercial programs, environmental coverage is frequently required by project owners, lenders, and contracts. As an independent agency, Pettineo Insurance works with specialty environmental carriers to structure CPL, site pollution, and combined programs around your specific operations and exposures.
