Backyard BBQ’s: Prevent a Simple Summer Soiree from Turning into a Full-Fledged House Fire

Backyard BBQ's: Prevent a Simple Summer Soiree from Turning into a Full-Fledged House Fire

Although grilling can be a fun and delicious way to prepare meals, exercising safety is of the utmost importance. In April, a woman and her daughter started the grill on a wood deck behind their home in Florida. They went to the front of the house and upon returning to the deck, discovered it had caught fire. The fire spread into their home and traveled through the first and second floors, then into the attic while they waited for help to arrive.

In fact, three out of five households owns a gas grill and an average of 8900 house fires per year are caused by grilling, with the peak occurring in the month of July. Fires like this are most often caused by three items; failure to properly clean the grill, something flammable too close to the grill, and leaks or broken grills. Following these tips can help you grill safely:

  • Clean fat or grease buildup off the grill after each use and remove it from the trays below.
  • Never use a grill indoors.
  • Always keep the grill well away from the home, including deck railings, overhangs and tree branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area, with charcoal fluid out of their reach and away from any heat sources.
  • Before using a gas grill be sure to check all connection points from the propane tank hose, and tighten them if loose. Check for leaks by applying a soap and water mix to the hose and look for bubbles when turning on the gas. If there are bubbles, immediately turn off the gas as the grill is unsafe to use until serviced.
  • When using charcoal starter fluid, never add it or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • Remember to let the coals completely cool and dispose of the ashes in metal containers.
  • Make it a rule to never leave a grill unattended and keep a fire extinguisher close by.
