When we think of insurance, we think of protecting the bigger items in our lives; a car, a house, a business, even your life. But what about the smaller items, such as jewelry?
What insurance covers your jewelry from theft?
Luckily there is coverage for that. In your homeowners policy there may be a small amount of coverage for theft or accidental misplacement. In most cases a person will have a standard policy, covering up to $5,000 and they usually place a per item limit. In other words, you could have $5,000 worth of coverage on your jewelry, and up to $1000 for each piece of jewelry.
If you do have jewelry that has a value beyond it's replacement cost, such as a family heirloom or really expensive pieces, we suggest taking the time to complete one of the two options:
- Specifically schedule the jewelry into your homeowners or renters insurance policy. We suggest you speak with your agent on the details of this coverage.
- Outside of homeowners insurance, you can purchase an inland marine insurance policy.
In both cases, you would need to get the jewelry appraised and provide the appraisal to your insurance agent.
It is important to speak with your agent to discuss your level of coverage and the restrictions regarding your homeowner's policy.
