Holiday Safety Tips

'Twas the night before Christmas, a time we admire,

but someone left the tree too close to the fire.

Now the presents are burning like an overcooked pastry,

because you ignored all the steps for holiday safety.

Does this holiday disaster moment ring a jingle bell or two? Hopefully not, but the fact is, as we decorate our homes this season, we are often so chock full of cheer that we forget to consider some of the inherent dangers involved with the decorating process.

Here a handful of holiday safety tips to remember as you deck the halls at home:

  1. Keep the Christmas tree away from any and all heat sources, such as the fireplace or heating vents.

  1. Water your Christmas tree to keep it hydrated, but be sure to unplug and clear out any lights or electrical decorations near the tree before you do.

  1. Be mindful of breakable tree ornaments in homes with children and pets.

  1. When hanging holiday lights, work in teams! Have a spotter hold a sturdy ladder and be sure to work slowly and carefully.

  1. Check any electrical decorations for damaged wires or broken bulbs.

  1. Install a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet for your heavy-duty holiday lights. This type of circuit interrupter will shut down power and help avoid disaster if there is an overcurrent.

  1. Never hammer nails into the wires that hold your holiday lights. Avoid damage to the wiring by using clips or safety pins.

  1. Read all labels on lights before use. Many are meant only for outdoor use and some specifically for indoors. Be sure you know the wattage you're putting out and how much your power source can handle.

  1. Check your fireplace carefully before use. Make sure the chimney fluke is open and the fireplace is clean. If you haven't built a fire since last season, there are likely dangerous levels of dust and dirt buildup.

10. Never keep candles lit overnight. Blow them out before you leave the house or go to bed.

With these tips in mind, there's no need to fear,

as a disaster free holiday is one full of cheer.

Now go and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year!
