Travel Insurance: To get or not to get, that is the question

In 2010 during an 8 day period, 107,000 flights were cancelled for approximately 10 million subsequently stranded passengers. The closure was due to eruptions of volcanic ash in Iceland. It was feared that the ash would damage aircraft engines. Many travelers were pleased by their decision to purchase travel insurance prior to the incident.

According to a recent study, one in six Americans stated that their travel has been affected by an event which travel insurance would typically cover. Even more interesting, 85% of those who got travel insurance said they were satisfied with it.

So, what exactly is travel insurance and what does it cover? Stated simply, it supplies reimbursement when:

  • You have to cancel your trip for a covered reason and your expenses are prepaid and non-refundable to include plane tickets, tours, hotels, etc.
  • You lose a portion of your trip if it is interrupted and you must return home, and also for any additional expenses for the last minute trip home
  • You have expenses such as extra hotel nights and meals if your trip is delayed
  • You have a medical emergency, expenses for accidents or illness, or airlift evacuation if you become ill during your trip
  • Your baggage is lost or for essentials you may need if it’s delayed in transit

Travel insurance policies also provide you with 24/7 assistance to help you find doctors, accommodation arrangements, or to contact your family in case of an emergency. In addition, they may provide assistance with lost travel documents, passports or prescriptions among many other services.

Some reasons you may need to cancel a trip may include:

  • Losing your job or being required to work
  • Your illness, injury or death, or that of a travel companion or family member
  • Terrorism at your destination
  • Flight cancellation and/or damage due to storms or natural disasters
  • Your travel supplier declaring bankruptcy
  • Jury duty
