Ten Hurricane Preparation Tips

hurricane.blog40% of the hurricanes that have landed in the United States have done so in Florida. Of the storms that have been category four or higher (sustained winds of 130-156 miles per hour), 83% have hit either Florida or Texas. Storm surge, high winds, inland flooding, tornadoes and rip currents can all be dangers during a hurricane. If you live in Florida, preparing for hurricane season is essential.

Our hurricane season begins June 1st and ends November 30th so now is an important time to begin your hurricane preparation with these ten tips:

1.) Determine if you are within an evacuation zone. Check your evacuation route and plan where you will go, such as a local shelter, friend or relative’s home. Don’t forget to plan for your pets and make sure all family members know what to do.

2.) Compile your disaster supplies. It’s a good idea to have:

  • food and water for each person for a week
  • a 30-day supply of any medications and a first-aid supply kit
  • batteries and portable chargers for cell phones and radios
  • flashlights and candles
  • battery operated radio/television
  • non-perishable foods and a can opener
  • if you have small children, include diapers, baby wipes, formula, baby food

3.) Fill up your cars with gas and have cash on hand.

4.) Prepare your home by trimming trees, securing windows and doors (including garage doors) with adequate coverings, bringing in loose items from outside, and moving your car into the garage or a secure location.

5.) Plan for sources of information such as television, radio, computer or government social media.

6.) Document your valuables and possessions, and take pictures of them.

7.) Compile your important documents and medical records, and store them in a waterproof container.

8.) Keep a bag of clothing and some bedding for each family member in the event of evacuation to a shelter.

9.) Board games and a deck of cards, arts and crafts, crayons and coloring pages can be stored in a tote bag. Your children will appreciate the distraction.

10.) Check with your insurance agent regarding your hurricane and wind insurance coverage. This applies whether you are a homeowner or a renter. Make sure you have flood insurance coverage and prepare your home and vehicles in compliance with your flood, hurricane and wind insurance policies. Know where your insurance documents are and take them with you if you evacuate.
