Summer storms are continuing to cause flooding in many parts of the country
Whether it’s in Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Eastern Kentucky, or Southern Oklahoma, flash floods are the most dangerous kind of floods, because they combine the destructive power of a flood with incredible speed and unpredictability.
The Washington Post reported our neighbors in Tampa are under water as 20 inches of rain has fallen in the Tampa area over the past two weeks and caused extreme flooding.
Flooding is the most common environmental hazard worldwide; it’s a natural disaster that impacts and devastates human lives more than any other.
Florida is no stranger to flooding and we should plan ahead because it can happen when you least expect it.
Coverage for flood (defined as rising water) is excluded under most standard homeowners or renters policies.A homeowner or renter wanting coverage for flood will need to get a separate or specific policy against this type of damage. For most of us, our most valued possession is our home and it’s worth protecting.
FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) has updated its flood zone maps and some property owners throughout Broward County can be required to purchase flood insurance for the first time.
To see if you are impacted by the update, Broward County has an Interactive Flood Map on its website so property owners can find out whether or not you live in a low, moderate, or high risk area. Here is the link to the Broward Interactive Flood Map.
If find you are in a low risk area, it does not mean you have NO risk of flooding. Just a few inches of water can cause thousands of dollars in damage. It’s a matter of deciding and exploring the best options for protecting your home and its contents because we all live in a flood zone. In fact, none of us are safe or excluded from the risk of flooding.
You can purchase flood insurance irrespective of where you reside, and there is no exclusion as to what type of ownership you represent (i.e., homeowner, renter, or business owner).
