6 Ways to be a Smart Homeowner

Being a new homeowner is a wonderful feeling! At Pettineo Insurance Agency, we’ve been welcoming new homeowners to the South Florida area for over 35 years.

With the newfound freedom of owning your own home comes great financial responsibilities. We understand the need to protect your investment and your future and we’re here to help you every step of the way!

To insure that you and your family continue to live comfortably, take a few moments to ponder these 5 different ways to be a smart homeowner:

  1. Get Properly Insured: If you finance a home with a mortgage, the lender most likely will require some form of insurance in order to fully replace the property in case of a total loss. Also, if you’re sharing the home with someone who relies on your income to pay mortgage, it’s important to list that person as a beneficiary under your life insurance plan in order to keep your home in the instance of an unexpected death.
  2. Keep up with MaintenanceIssues: Being a homeowner means there are no more landlords to eat up the maintenance costs. Don’t neglect any issue that could damage your home and get more costly over time.
  3. Get Help with your Tax Return: A new home means significant changes to your tax situation. To be certain you are eligible for certain deductions as a new homeowner, it’s highly recommended that you file your taxes with a professional in order to maximize your return and ensure everything is filed correctly.
  4. Keep Receipts for Home Improvement: These receipts can help you maximize your tax-free earnings when and if you decide to sell your home in the future.
  5. Create a Home Inventory: To protect you and your belongings, creating a home inventory is a must. Generate an up-to-date room-by-room inventory of your belongings by taking photographs or video. Be sure to focus on items that are especially important to you (your flat screen TV, or designer shoes perhaps?) to ensure your belongings are protected.
  6. Make friends with your Neighbors: It’s always a great idea to have friends who live near by! Neighbors are also an excellent source for information. Who do they trust to fix their electrical issues? Do they know a plumber? Ask around and see who they trust with their maintenance issues.

Consider us your neighbor when it comes to your insurance policy! We’re always here to answer your questions.
