Hurricane Watches and Warnings: Do you know the signs?

Hurricane Matthew was the first Category 5 Atlantic hurricane to form since 2007. Floridians made preparations for the storm, which they expected to arrive late in the evening on Thursday, October 7. Fortunately for Florida residents, Matthew did not make landfall as had been expected, and was downgraded to a Category 2 by that evening.

Instead, it made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane in Georgia and South Carolina with major flooding. Though the hurricane was further downgraded as it hit North Carolina and Virginia, the rain it produced resulted in record-breaking floods. The full extent of the destruction is still unknown, but many homes and businesses were damaged.

Knowing the difference between a hurricane watch and a hurricane warning can be helpful in identifying the time when storm preparations should already be completed. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) offers the following definitions:

* A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher for a hurricane or sustained winds of 39 to 73 mph for a tropical storm). Conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous.

* A warning is typically issued 36 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical–storm-force winds. Conditions that make outside preparations difficult or dangerous. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed.

Although Hurricane Matthew was not nearly as destructive as anticipated, it is estimated that there have been approximately $6 billion worth of damages already incurred, and more costs expected from additional flooding and business interruption.
